This project aims to examine dyslexia through the views of developmental psychopathology in a context of everyday life. The research questions include studying how developmental psychopathology can contribute to an understanding of how dyslexia may interfere with an individual’s development, and why it is important to assess dyslexia as a condition that involves both biological, social and psychological aspects. Using a case study, the importance of social and psychological acceptance in regard to dyslexia was found. Developmental psychopathology was found to be helpful when describing different developmental pathways the dyslexic in our case study experienced as a consequence of social and psychological issues arisen from living with dyslexia. The results show, that in order to better understand the development of an individual with dyslexia, one should consider other aspects than teaching dyslexics reading techniques and mainly viewing dyslexia as a cognitive condition.
