Trust has been widely considered to be the currency of the sharing economy. Motivated by this
phenomenon, this project is focused on how platforms in the sharing economy are able to handle this
currency, and effectively establish trust in users, leading to value creation. Due to the unique business
model, much of the literature on gaining and regaining trust in organizations is not applicable to
sharing economy platforms. Therefore, this project aims to contribute to the literature by uncovering
how two platforms in the sharing economy are able to establish trust through platform updates.
Taking a starting point in Keymolen’s (2016) interpersonal system trust theory, Airbnb and Uber’s
platform updates will be analyzed as they apply to three trust establishing themes; safety and security,
reducing complexities through familiarity and communicating benevolence.
