The scientific research examines how the identity of refugees is constructed based on Kristian Husted’s book Vahid (2018), and whether there are certain discourses about refugees, which is repeated in the Danish media, or not.
In order to answer this thesis statement, we have applied Giorgio Agamben’s theories regarding the naked life, biopolitics and state of exception on the book Vahid (2018). Furthermore, we have used Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis on five articles from the Danish news media Politiken during the period 12/21-15 to 12/27-15. We have, in addition to the discourse analysis, conducted a comparative analysis of the discourses from Vahid (2018) and the articles from Politiken.
The scientific research concludes that the identity of refugees is constructed due to a biopolitical structure in the society, in which refugees are being reduced to a naked life. Furthermore, the project concludes that certain discourses from Vahid (2018), where refugees are being objectified, are also being repeated in the danish media. However not all discourses from Vahid (2018) are represented in the medias, but there is a tendency, where negative discourses are being linked with the identity of refugees.
