In Denmark the education system is a highly debated subject. It is placed in a tension between
discourses, competences and needs from both the single individual and society in general.
This paper will examine and discuss the surrounding factors which applies to the young
individual in the choice of education. In Denmark there’s a tendency to the fact that young
people choose high school over vocational education, which makes an inequality in the
secondary education system. There is a problem in this because of the fact that we are in need
of craftsmen in Denmark, which is bad for both the private customers and the companies. In
view of this the state of Denmark made the EUX-education to attract more young people to the
vocational educations. At this education the students gets two educations, which opens a lot of
educational opportunities for the individual.
An analysis of a self-undertaken interview shows us that young people today are often affected
by the surrounding factors, whereby they position themselves to fit into the discourses in
society and social relations. To support our analysis we used theoreticians as Pierre Bourdieu,
Bronwyn Davies and Rom Harré. Furthermore the project also discusses how the fact that EUX
and its educational structure is so new, creates a lot of challenges which makes both the
institutions and individuals positioning in society rather complicated.
In that connection we can conclude that EUX is subject to a number of discourses, which affects
both the individual, but also the institutions’ position in the danish society
