This paper examines and discuss Instagram’s impact on the development of the identity in the youth, and how it affects their self-image in the danish post-modern society. The purpose of this paper is also to highlight the expectations and demands that youth nowadays have to the best version of themselves. This investigation is done by doing qualitative research in the form of a focus group interview with four high school students to get their opinion on the matter. In order to understand the youth from a theoretical point of view we included Anthony Giddens, Sven Mørch and Sherry Turkle amongst others to examine their perspective on the digital identity and adolescence in our postmodern society. Our analysis is done thematically, where we investigate how the expectations are formed and affects young people's lives, body ideals and how the youth view influencers as what Giddens phrases as ‘expert systems’, that serves as a form of expert knowledge in social constructed systems. Furthermore, we discuss the implications of how Instagram impacts our individualization in social contexts and how danish post-modern society demands high expectations from the youth. Finally, we conclude that Instagram has changed our relationship with each other and that it plays an important role in how youth create their identity in relation to their online social networks.
