Studenteropgave: Speciale

This thesis explores vocational students’ opinions regarding local elections and politics in the municipality of Næstved, Denmark. Recent studies have shown an alarming decline in voting turnout for the under 30’s. In 2009, less than half the voters between 18 and 29 turned out for the local elections. Through a phenomenological approach and qualitative methodology, three focus group interviews have been conducted. I seek to understand how the students as a group experience the local election campaign, within the school as a field of their life-world. The results of the thesis show that the local elections campaign is rather absent at the vocational school. The interaction between the life-world and the public sphere is weak, as the politicians do not campaign at the school ground during the election campaign and does not seek to address the issues that concern the young students. The students are highly disappointed with the absence of the candidates, and express a feeling of being neglected in favor of the local high school students, to whom the politicians give much more attention. The vocational students express a lack of knowledge about the local elections. They reject to seek information on their own, since they see their lack of knowledge as a problem the politicians should be solving during the campaign. The vocational students find it important to cast their vote in a democratic elec-tion, but their low level of orientation towards the public sphere encumbers the enlightened choice. They are well informed about the local issues through regional television, radio and to some extent social media, but due to the candidates’ lack of interest in the life-world of the vocational students they find it hard to vote for any of them. Almost half of the students are in doubt whether to vote or advocates that they should cast a blank vote in the forthcoming election. However, the students do not wish for democracy to be changed through quota or a lowering of the voting age. They just want the politicians to pay attention to their everyday life and the issues that concern them.
