This paper examines how the local organizational culture, as a context, relates to the user
experience (UX) of a system. This paper bases its research on an empirical study through
Hassenzahl and Tractinskys’ definition of UX (2006), Hertzums’ article ‘Images of usability’ (2010)
and Scheins’ theory on organizational culture (1994). By researching two similar organizations -
their different cultures and user experiences with the same Content Management System (CMS),
we have found a relation between organizational culture and UX, through a comparative analysis of
the two organizations. The result showed that different organizational cultures facilitates different
user experiences, since culture affects aspects of the UX, like the internal state of the user and
hedonic experience of the system.
Furthermore, the importance of organizational structures emerged during the making of this
paper. We found that the structure has a clear influence on the culture in an organization, and
through this influence, it affects the user experience of a system.
