This thesis was inspired by creating the experience design Under the Surface (Under Overfladen), featuring aesthetic and site-specific principles. Under the Surface was exhibited at Ofelia Plads with the goal of highlighting the environmental consequences of waste in Copenhagen Harbour and draw attention to this issue using an aesthetic communicative form. An information campaign was simultaneously launched on social media to promote awareness of the exhibition at the centre of Copenhagen. The design process of Under the Surface is structured to reflect the Design Thinking method, and following a thorough exploration of this design process, the collected empirical data is subsequently analysed and discussed in accordance with the theoretical basis of this thesis.
The conclusion reached is that with its aesthetic tools in the form of symbols and collective references, Under the Surface has successfully created understanding and awareness of the general problem of waste in Copenhagen Harbour. The empirical data collected provide no grounds for defining the degree of transformation Under the Surface has managed to create in individuals, however these data reveal that the project has achieved its goal.
