Ultra digital nyhedsformidling til børn - I spændingsfeltet mellem demokratisk dannelse og underholdning

Abstrakt

Disseminating news for children is highly challenging, as children are living in a digitalized world with a myriad of entertaining and informing media offers on digital platforms. The Danish broadcast cooperation (DR) is a licence financed public institution, which through the concept ‘Ultra Nyt’ attempts to accommodate this challenge by distributing news coverage to the 7 to 12 year olds on a variety of platforms. With the American presidential election as the case, the following paper examines Ultra Nyt’s attempt to cover the election and questions how children optimally should receive news about matters as these. The paper discusses the paradox between preparing children for critical participation in democracy and yet meeting their need for reassurance, as well as it examines the merits and disadvantages connected to making the content as fun and filled with graphical icons and interaction elements as possible. Through a reception analysis of three focus groups with children aged 11 to 12 we find that the children experience Ultra Nyt’s news coverage of the election on Instagram, Snapchat and in their newscast as entertaining and informative. The children interacts with the elements on social media but yet in some cases do not feel like these provide them with enough information, why Ultra Nyt’s transmedia storytelling across platforms is preferable. At some points Ultra Nyt’s vision to reassure the children that they live in a safe world becomes symbolic civic education. Therefore it is desirable for them to aim for the perfect line between unfiltered critical reporting and age-appropriate, interaction inviting reporting.
