This study examines in what ways underlying psychological views of children’s development are implicitly conveyed in the document Kvalitet i anbringelsen from Glostrup Observationshjem. The goal is to discuss which implications these underlying views of children’s development can poten-tially cause. This is particularly concerning the children’s possibilities for development in the institu-tional environment. Methodically this problem is examined by conducting a document analysis, where the document Kvalitet i anbringelsen is treated as a text, and the underlying meaning behind the statements are interpreted and compared to different theoretical perspectives. We conclude that different views regarding children’s development are presented in the document. The primary understanding of development that manifest itself in the document is inspired by Bowlby and attachment theory. This means that the child is viewed as vulnerable, in that the child’s opportunity to develop normally is determined by the child’s early experience and succesfull at-tachment to certain adults. This can potentially lead to the interpretations of a child’s problems in the institutional environment, which are contextually bound, as being rooted in the child itself. In-stead, we believe that a child should be understood beyond its previous experiences, and the inter-pretation of the child’s problems should be based on the context, the child is a part of.
