An Abstract Life skills and Basic education – The importance for the social cohesion. The aim of our project is to examine the English and Danish public primary school systems. We have chosen to discuss England, as there is a scholastic-political development pointing in the direction of this school approach. Given the trend in Danish public primary schools, one sees that we are moving towards England in terms of our school policies, and that this may have an effect on the social cohesion. When we describe the development in Denmark, on behalf of the government's 2010 proposal, there is a clear tendency for increased focus on level differentiation, which can lead to level segregation in the primary school. To elucidate the developmental traits in both countries, we use a brief historical overview, in addition to the concepts of education and training, in order to comprehend the concept of social cohesion in the two countries. According to Giddens, we may look upon this development in view of notions of emancipatory and lifestyle politics, where Denmark is moving towards the latter. This development will create a lesser extent of social cohesion in public primary schools from a Danish understanding of the concept. We have made use of a qualitative approach to illuminate our problem statement and issues.
