Abstrakt

It is the aim of the following project to investigate in which degree pro eugenic arguments were used in the debate on forced sterilization of ‘the mentally deficient’ in Denmark. The scientific basis on which the pro eugenic arguments were based will be investigated, as well as the question of whether or not these arguments underlie the laws of sterilization. The different views on heredity, when the laws of sterilization became effective in 1929 and 1934, will be described, and on this basis the scientific content of the eugenic arguments will be exposed. It is our conclusion that a large part of the debate on sterilization was based on eugenic arguments, and that most of these had a scientific basis. Even so the passing of the law on sterilization had no scientific basis, and was thus passed to a greater extent for social and economical reasons.
