Studenteropgave: Bachelorprojekt

In 2012 Denmark was rated as the most trusting nation among 86 other countries in terms of how much the population trust in each other. This thesis seeks to examine how political malaise - which is also understood as distrust towards our elected politicians - affects the so-called 'trust-society' we have in Denmark. In detail, this thesis examines political malaise in Denmark and whether the distrust caused by political malaise potentially leads to an increased distrust towards other institutions in society. Finally, it examines whether this increased distrust towards politicians influences the very way in which people engage in different relationships with each other. We seek to examine this by introducing three theoretical concepts: Trust, social capital and legitimacy. The thesis concludes that even though political malaise may influence the level of trust people feel and show towards political institutions and each other, more extensive research has to be conducted in order to deduce that this relationship is causal. However, political malaise is a serious matter which must be taken seriously due to its potential to threaten the Danish trust-society.
