This study sets out to investigate how to improve the conditions for participation in decision making in context of the working life of contemporary late-modern society. With a methodical inspiration in the critical theory of the Frankfurter School an ideal of participation is constructed on basis of the ethical recognition theory of Axel Honneth and informed by theoretical views of Rasmus Willig, Nancy Fraser and others. The primary mode of research is hermeneutic, valuing the conscious use of the prejudice and pre-judgments of the researchers throughout the study. The approach can be described as critical hermeneutic, where there the theoretically informed normative ideal is not universal nor fixed, but open for change through the reflexive analytical process that the study manifests. The evolution of the normative ideal will be explicitly described throughout the analysis. The first analysis consists of a theoretical synthesis informed by views of Sennett, Willig, Fraser, Honneth and political theorist Ove Pedersen, where the combined inputs enables new perspectives on the challenges of participation as an ideal in the modern working life. The second analysis is a case-study of the social-economic construction company EVD and the implications of their form of collective governing on the employees. The study finds that there is a genuine possibility of creating autonomous spaces of parity in participation, avoiding the general the side effects rationalistic market driven graduation of recognition found in the theoretical synthesis. Still a lot of effort and special preconditions are required from the employees for a collective governed company to thrive within the current economic framework and therefore measures have to be taken by the state, in order to make better conditions for social-economic to grow as a phenomenon. The general view of economics as a goal rather than the way of getting there is questioned calling for a general change of thought within the individual as well as state and private sector. Finally perspectives are drawn towards a further investigation into the sociological views of the interplay between collective and individualistic mode of thought that seems to be present underneath the surface in the argumentation of this study.
