Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

This project seeks to understand the problematics for the pacification process that currently takes place in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. The pacification process is analysed as an urban function, which seeks to create a new urban meaning for the whole of Rio de Janeiro, set forth by the Government, and as such the project seeks to understand the conflict over the urban function. This conflict is grounded in certain aspects of the favela residents’ habitus, and namely a strong mistrust to the state, which is grounded in a history of neglect and violence. The project has found that due to certain historic events the favela residents create a self-exclusion mechanism, which complicates the pacification process. The capitals that are at stake for the favela residents are cultural and social capitals, which have created a strong sense of belonging within the favelas, further adding to the notion of self-exclusion.
