The Psychology of Lucid Dreaming

Nikolaj Eibye

Studenteropgave: Speciale

The aim of this project is to understand the psychological experience of the lucid dream state. In order to do this, the method is to compare theory of the experience of the lucid dream state to theory of the experience of the non-lucid dream state and the waking state. Furthermore, the method of this project is highly theoretical. Empirical evidence is however presented as part of the theory, which is being drawn upon. This theory thus, is heavily based on empirical studies carried out by Stephen LaBerge among others.

Throughout this project the focus will be cognitive processes, mental content – and its interaction with other mental content as well as with sensory information – attention, consciousness and lucidity and the mental interaction between lucid and non-lucid elements. These will be examined theoretically, which will lead to new or altered understandings of them. These new understandings then, will be employed in order to understand the three states and their relation to each other.
