This study attempts to explore the discursive and social practices behind the students’ discourse at American universities imposing restrictions on speech with regard to ethnic identities, by studying a case that took place at Columbia University in the US. This paper uses Stuart Hall’s ‘The spectacle of the other’ theory and Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis approach. This study argues that the speech deals with stereotypes and reproduces the discursive practices under the influence of the racial system of representation, which are the main reasons for the ongoing shift in students’ discourse in the United States.
