Abstrakt

The examination of the Hawaiian cultural identity through the case of the indigenous performance of hula, utilising the postcolonial critiques of Homi Bhabha. The project takes a look at the sociopolitical history of the islands since the western settlements and the change of the tradition of hula through history. It examines identity politics within the sovereignty debates of the islands and how they are represented in the performance and practice of hula.
