Abstrakt

The paper seeks to investigate the discourse of Central and Eastern European migrants in the UK in relation to the enlargement of EU in 2004. It is based on a content analysis of the narratives about Polish labour migrants in four British newspapers and related to theories on migrant decision making processes and discursive strategies. The discourse in the newspapers differ, as the broadsheets predominantly present a positive narrative on the migrants, while the tabloids tend to present a negative narrative, arguing that the migrants are 'welfare tourists' who cause social dumping. This paper assesses to what extent the British newspapers present the Polish labour migrants in coherence with findings in academic studies and how the newspapers differ in their presentation of the migrants.
