The Commutation of Chelsea Manning’s Prison Sentence and the Construction of Ideological Positions in Partisan News Media

Studenteropgave: Fagmodulprojekt

This research paper investigates how partisan news media The Blaze constructs
legitimate subject positions in their online newspaper articles reporting on the
commutation of whistle-blower Chelsea Manning’s prison sentence. By engaging
with the method of Critical Discourse Analysis we analyse how two articles,
published by The Blaze, construct legitimate subject positions around the US political
binary of Democrat/Republican by positing a range of characteristics into a variety of
signifiers relating to Chelsea Manning. We argue that marginalized identities such as
those of transgender people become sites of power struggle in the public debate and
are exploited to exercise control over political opponents.
