Synergy has been observed between the various cellulolytic enzymes of the fungus Trichoderma Reesei. Termed cellulases, these enzymes come together to form a potent cocktail of biomass degrading enzymes. The biofuel industry has seen a recent surge partly due to the advances in attaining a more applicable understanding of the mechanisms of synergy that occur when said enzymes are used to degrade biomass into fermentable sugar. To that end, this review summarizes the various theories postulating the molecular mechanisms of synergy at play in T. reesei endocellulases and exocellulases. Herein, we suggest possible reasons for explaining the overlapping characters of the enzymes TrCel7A, TrCel6A and TrCel7B, and how they may be driving synergistic mechanisms.
