This paper examines the understanding of the phenomena “Sydhavnsånd”, translated to the spirit of Sydhavn. The phenomena is examined in order to develop a concept for an experience café in Sydhavn, which is a project that is part of an urban renewal of the area of Sydhavnen. It is argued that, the spirit of Sydhavn can be understood as a set of narratives that have emerged in the bodily experiences of the citizens of Sydhavn that is shared in a community, and results in a consensus of an understanding of the phenomena. From a rich collection of data, it is concluded that the narratives mainly deals with the topics: History, Sense of community and “Us against you”.
The sense of community, tolerance and inclusion is of great importance in the experience of the spirit of Sydhavn, which is why a paradox emerges in the fear of letting in new citizens and initiatives in Sydhavn, as part of an urban renewal. To this, it is argued that the citizens of Sydhavn must open up for changes and invite and include new citizens into their community, in order to set the agenda in the development of Sydhavn parallel to a conservation of the spirit of Sydhavn.
A set of values is developed in order to handle the paradox, and still support the spirit of Sydhavn.
