This thesis examines the potential changes the health robot Care-O-bot 3 can cause regarding elder care, with a focus on the cognitively and/or physically limited, and to what extend those changes are ethically permissible. The thesis contains a theoretical framework consisting of a Healthcare Technology Assessment that is based upon information about Care-O-bot 3 gathered from Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation and a Capability approach. This has importance since it gives a better perspective into the capabilities of Care-O-bot 3. This thesis does not seek to find an outright answer to whether or not these aforementioned changes are ethically permissible, but how to issue a debate in which to discuss the different angles of this subject. Therefore it is necessary to also specifically discuss terms such as “presence” and “deception” beforehand, since they carry a significant amount of importance in enlightening the subject. With this, and the gathered knowledge, in mind, the report listed a series of hypothetical scenarios, in which it is discussed how the implementation of Care-O-bot 3 influences both the affected staff and patients.
