This project aims to examine prevailing understandings of health in the field of conventional medicine and holistic treatment. Furthermore it examines whether functional medicine can promote people's health in a mental as well as physical way. The preconceptions are that the danish health care system has some lacks and that functional medicine may contribute to making people healthy. In order to obtain an understanding of the subject the method involves a qualitative field study in terms of two interviews with two different women who have experienced a course of treatment with functional medicine. This method is closely related to the paper's hermeneutic approach. To deduce prevailing understandings of health in conventional medicine and holistic treatment the theoretical foundation consists of Aaron Antonovsky's theory Sense of Coherence, Laila Launsø's research on differences and similarities in the clinical- and alternative paradigms and Uffe Juul-Jensen's philosophical discussion on health conceptions. The findings of the paper includes that the prevailing understandings of health in the field of conventional medicine and holistic treatment are very different. Conventional medicine is based on authority and the responsibility of the treatment is on the doctor. The holistic approach is based on the users responsibility to make healthy choices and it aims to treat the cause of disease instead of the symptoms. The prevailing understandings of health in each field has a major impact on the users experiences with their treatment and on what kind of treatment they prefer. Likewise is functional medicine, in this case, promoting both physical and mental health. The mental aspect is elucidated through the increased sense of coherence that the informants experiences. The physical aspect is expressed through the fact that the informants are cured from mental illness and migraine during their treatment with functional medicine.
