The thesis concerns the role of art and culture in the production of a (new) spatial entity such as a cross-border region. It belongs to the fields of cultural geography, and approaches the region with an understanding of space as a a produced entity with materiel, the social and mental dimensions among others. This approach is inspired by Henri Lefebvre. The cross-border region, Øresund, is seen as a part of the regionalization process in Europe, and as an attempt to attract economic growth to the area. The planners is giving culture a central position in the development of the region. The cross-border region of Øresund has existed for 8 years, but the integration proces has been slower than expected. This relates, to some degree, to the lack of a common identity in the region. The region is in an uncertain stage where different actors try to promote their versions of the region. In this context the thesis deals with the role of regional cultural projects in relation to the establishment of the region and the development of a regional identity. The analysis is based on qualitative interviews with organizers behind the musicbiennale “Sound Around”, which was held in October 2007, as well as field observations. The thesis indicates that “Sound Around” was part of the attempt of regional activists to select one cultural characteristic as representing the identity of the region. It did contribute to the shaping of the region, but due to the limited appeal of the event to larger audiences, the significance for the regional identity is rather small. The thesis discusses “Sound Around” in relation to other projects in the region, and indicates that the meeting between different cultures involves a clarification of difference, and this can be seen as a step toward integration. For culture to have a significans for the regional identity, its important that integration is beeing part of the organisations structure, and that kommerciel benefits not overuele the artistic concerns.
