Studenteropgave: Basisprojekt

This paper examines the research question: How is sugar dating communicated in the documentary series Gina Jaqueline - en sugardaters fortælling and which reactions have this caused? The research question will be answered by analysing the docu-mentary with focus on cinematic techniques and discourse.

This will be executed with a theoretical background based upon the theories of: Professor in Cinema Studies Bill Nichols, Professor Emeritus in Media Literacy in the Department of Communications and Journalism Art Silverblatt, Danish Profes-sor in Film and Media Studies Anne Jerslev, Associate professor at the Institute of Nordic Studies and Linguistics Helle Kannik Haastrup and Professor of Linguistics Norman Fairclough. In order to obtain a clear understanding of how sugar dating is communicated, we expound Nichols theory regarding the documentary genre, Jerslevs theory concerning reality-tv, Silverblatts theory regarding production el-ements and Haastrups theory concerning the neoformalistic movie analysis. These theories provide us with a basic understanding of how sugar dating is communi-cated in the documentary. In addition to this, Faircloughs theory gives us a more profound understanding of the discourses concerning the phenomenon sugar da-ting.

The documentary is the subject for the analysis using gathered theory covering both the movie analysis and the discourses. The analysis deals with how sugar da-ting is communicated in the documentary. We examine how the cinematic tech-niques, discovered by the theories, find expression in the documentary. We have divided the discussion in two parts. Firstly, we discuss how sugar dating is com-municated by picking up on the account and analysis. Furthermore, we discuss which reactions the presentation of sugar dating has caused.

Finally, we conclude that sugar dating is communicated positively, idyllically and romantically in the documentary and the documentary has caused an increased fo-cus on the phenomenon sugar dating.
