The purpose of this project was to perform general studies on the phenomenon Embodied Interaction. Our motivation for doing this was the increasing interest, both creatively and commercially, in new ways to use our computer technologies in the tangible world, as well as in affecting the human perception. Embodied Interaction allows a person to use his body as an instrument in the world, and utilize his bodily presence and motions, to control software and hardware alike. By delving into this project through research using the explorative design method, we designed a simple installation. The system consisted of a sensor in the shape of a Kinect that reads the users position in the installation, and through Processing, transforms this position to sounds; soft music at the centre of the installation, and white noise at either ends. Accompanying the auditory aspect, we included a lamp. This lamp would flicker when no persons were present, and change to a blue hue when a user was in the centre. The installation was placed at the Roskilde University campus, and was observed during a regular business day. The observations performed during the experiment were then analyzed through the specific theories of Embodied Interaction, in relation to the phenomenological studies of the body, and phenomenological theory of intersubjectivity. We also utilized the theories of perception to create an understanding of people’s interaction with our installation; both how and why they used it. Furthermore we gathered a historical and general understanding of the phenomena, New Media Art, Embodied Interaction and Tangible Computing. Through analysis of our observations and general theoretical endeavours we concluded that sensory systems are an effective method of creating interesting installations based on Embodied Interaction. A valid method of analyzing these installations and their applications, can be done through the theories of phenomenology and perception, where the physical reactions can be observed through perception, and phenomenology can be utilized to understand the mindset of the user(s).
