Studenteropgave: Kandidatprojekt

This thesis is cross-discipline cooperation between Working Life Studies and Health Promotion. The
thesis aims to study nurses' sense of stress in a specific hospital department and attempts to use both
qualitative and quantitative methods in order to fulfill the thesis requirement within the disciplines at
Roskilde University. The study seeks to investigate “How a hospital’s work environment affects nurses’
experience of stress and well-being?” through a philosophical-, aswell as critical hermeneutic focused
empirical analysis of semi-structured interviews. The analysis uses Aaron Antonovsky’s concepts of
stress, resource and sense of coherence, aswell as Rasmus Willig’s theory on the neoliberalism’s
disarming of criticism. The thesis concludes that the working environment negatively affects the nurses’
well-being to a high workload aswell as internalization of criticism, which jeopardizes the nurses’
physical and mental health.
