Which strategic challenges does a project manager have in the start-up phase of a Danish documentary film project when he/she has to raise capital for the project? This master dissertation takes its point of departure in the start-up phase of a Danish documentary film project. The project aims to account for how documentary film makers raise capital for their projects as well as how they handle the challenges that may arise in relation to the project's surrounding world and other interested actors. The start-up phase of a documentary film project consists of the development and production of the film as well as the research of the subject matter. This work should lead to a prototype of the film as well as an application which ideally will yield funding granted by Det Danske Filminstitut. Det Danske Filminstitut is the largest contributor of financial support as it concerns the majority of documentary films in produced in Denmark and they represent one of the only possibilities of acquiring funding during the start-up phase. I have investigated how a project manager strategically manages a project in order to acquire funding by Det Danske Filminstitut. I have worked with interviews as a method and I utilize a hermeneutic theory of science as a starting point to structure the master dissertation. I have analyzed the process that the documentary film makers must go through by using the prevalent literature on project management regarding uncertainty as well as the surrounding world. This I have combined with new institutionalist theory of organization to demonstrate the institutionalized pressure applied by Det Danske Filminstitut in oder to maintain their position in the industry. The dissertation can conclude that the start-up phase in a Danish documentary film project has certain specific strategical problems or issues which are caused by Det Danske Filminstitut's high requirements to receive funding.
