Every year over one billion ton of food, that is meant for human consumption, is wasted and the Danes were in 2010 placed third amongst the countries that wasted the most. Every year the Danes throw out food worth 16 million Danish Kroner which is equal to a family of four throwing approximately 10.000,00 dkk straight into the bin. Studies have shown that in 2013 it was the younger consumers, aged 18 to 34, that had reduced their food waste the most. How can this be? Based on Pierre Bourdieu’s practice theory, this master thesis’ primary aim is to investigate students practices concerning reducing food waste. The thesis’ empirical material is based on semistructured interviews with five students, their ages ranging from early- to mid twenties. The thesis analysis is based on Bourdieu’s practice theory the study of human doings. In the analysis you will find that an analysis of field has been conducted. The subjects of analysis in this thesis has been the field’s historical and temporal development, the students individual habitus, as well as the construction of the field and an analysis of the students class habitus in order to be able to identify the fields doxa. The intention with the field analysis was to find out what the students practices is concerning reducing food waste. The thesis’ main discussion is based on the battle in the field between dominating, retail and food industries and dominated agents, students and consumers. The premise for attending the field is for the agents to agree, that there is a common interest in the field, ergo reducing food waste. Other discussions in the thesis concerns, among other, the paradoxes in the students practices’ where it caught attention, that some of the students show conflicting practices concerning reducing food waste. Based on the thesis’ research question the thesis conclude that the students practices concerning reducing food waste is that they try to keep their waste on a minimum, by applying different practices such as shopping according to their needs, using what they have bought before buying more and saving their leftovers with the intention of eating them later. The field analysis show furthermore that the students practices is influenced by their parents’ habitus which they adopted and adjusted to fit their own. Furthermore it has been concluded that the field of food waste is a paradox filled field, and so are the students practices.
