This project seeks to explore how grief and coping with grief is expressed in “Sorgens have” by Caroline Albertine Minor, har døden taget noget fra dig så giv det tilbage by Naja Marie Aidt and de by Helle Helle. The project examines to answer whether it is possible to combine the grief in the three pieces with three selected theories of grief and if so, how?
The project originates from a curiosity about grief in literature and how the grief segregates from appearing in a biographical piece rather than a fictional piece. The project concludes that grief in the three pieces is expressed differently. Which is due to the three very different types of grief appearing in each piece. In “Sorgens have” a death is not happening, but an accident which causes a memory loss and a changed boyfriend. The grief is expressed through a present but angry and powerless story about how the narrator's boyfriend is completely changed to her. In har døden tager noget fra dig så giv det tilbage a death is happening, and the grief is expressed through a fragmented and chaotic form which paints a picture of the narrator’s state of mind. In de the grief is caused by a disease which will lead to death. The grief is expressed through the unsaid, it is an implicit grief which is barely insinuated but still very clear. In spite of the three different types of grief which is expressed through the three pieces, they have one thing in common. The feelings of guilt and shame are two very essential feelings in grief, whether the grief is caused by a death or not, and whether the death is very sudden and unjust, or appears after a time of disease.
Additionally this project concludes that it is possible to combine the grief in the three pieces with three selected theories of grief, but comparing four very concrete phases with a very abstract grief will always be challenging. Because grief is individual, it is hard to generalise and understand grief through a process, or phases and tracks, which are trying to systemise grief. If so, these theories should be reconsidered to not understanding grief and loss as only being when experiencing death. But even though it is possible, perhaps grief should not ever be systemised.
