In this casestudy we investigate how the municipality of Ærøs handles the arrival of asylum seekers. In 2014 an asylum seekers center was erected, the purpose of which was to house the 40 young unaccompanied refugees, who were seeking asylum in Denmark. The project focuses on relations between the locals of Ærø and the asylum seekers, and which social and cultural conditions that have been significant. This leads us to the projects thesis statement: Which factors have contributed to the apparently successful handling of the asylum seekers at Ærø? This project contains a description of Ærø, both in a geographical, historical and social capital perspective, because we use these factors as explanations for the successful handling of the asylum seekers, in our analysis. We also use social capital theories, focusing on bonding and bridging social capital, combined with theories of recognition and place. Based on the project we can conclude that different factors on Ærø which takes part in the receiving and handling of the asylum seekers. Ærøs local community can be defined as a combination of the vertical and horizontal network which means that the foreigners becomes a part of the social network on the island and gets an understanding of the social norms and values of Ærø. Furthermore voluntariness contributes largely. It takes lots of energy and willingness to open up to the newcomers. The everyday life at the asylum seeker center plays an important part of the recognition of the asylum seekers, whereas Rise skole is not contributing significantly in terms of recognition. In addition the historical perspective is a key element in the handling of the asylum seekers at Ærø. Their maritime tradition and positive experiences with refugees from Bosnia in the 1990s which to this day still lives at Ærø, has made a big impact on their understanding of life and their willingness to welcome foreigners into their community. We will discuss Ærø from two different points of view regarding the concept of place, and furthermore investigate if the central factors we find at Ærø have can be transferred to other places. Finally we made a plan which describes how the central factors of the successful handling of the asylum seekers in transferrable to other municipalities.
