Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

In 1903 the term social psychiatry was internationally introduced into the literature and it has been used in different connotations throughout the cen-tury. Today three distinct connotations of social psychiatry exist. In Den-mark the term came into use in 1970 and although it is ambiguous today it has during the last ten years predominantly been defined as the social work with mentally ill people. This thesis examines how social psychiatry developed in Denmark in the years 1970 to 2005. Special interest has been put into the question of how the development of the different definitions of social psychiatry and the theoretical and methodical foundations are connected to the different posi-tions in the field and what consequences this has had for the conflicts in the field. Furthermore it has been assessed which definition covers the field most accurately today. The thesis concludes that the development of social psychiatry in Denmark can be divided into three phases: a community psychiatry phase (1970-1994), a social phase (1994-2000), and a scientific phase (2000- today). The psychiatric field is characterized by conflicts and problems with collabora-tion which are caused by the different scientific affiliations. With the social phase a distinct positioning between the social profession and the health profession appears. In the scientific phase psychologists gain more influence in the field due to their development of a methodical and theoretical founda-tion of the social psychiatry. The scientific phase furthermore shows signs of rapprochement between the positions. The definition that is proposed to be used in Danish social psychiatry is: Social psychiatry is concerned with the effects of the social environment on the mental health of the individual, and with the effects of the mentally ill person on his/her social environment.
