The study has its point of departure in a recent phenomenon called slumtourism. Slumtourism is a branch of global tourism, developed on the basis of historical and cultural elements. It is a branch of tourism, which seeks to experience poverty in slum cultures. In this regard the study seeks to investigate, why tourists are attracted to this type of travel. There will also be an investigation of the ethical aspects of slumtourism, in order to assess whether it is an intrusion into the locals’ privacy. The study will include an analysis of the approach of respectively tourists visiting the slum and the people living there. This analysis is processed from interviews and participant observation in the slum Dharavi in India.
