Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

In this project we have sought to explore the narrative in the TV series 1864 by Ole Bornedal and the reasons for the heavy debate that arose in the wake of the premiere of the TV series. 100 million Danish kroner was granted by the Danish Ministry of Culture to DR and Bornedal to produce the series and as a part of that grant the series should provide knowledge about important historical events related to the Battle of Dybbøl in 1864. Mainly politicians and historians debated, and is still debating, the historical correctness of the series, or more specific, the lack of it. Some politicians and historians criticized the TV series for being simplified when it came to historic events and for the lack of learning potential for the viewer. The purpose of this project is to explore why a TV series about a 150 years old historical event was so heavily debated amongst politicians, historians and in the Danish society. To investigate that issue we make use of different theories about history to analyze chosen parts of the TV series. Chosen contributions to the debate of the TV series will be analyzed through a critical discourse analysis. We have found that Bornedal use history on several levels in 1864. He actualizes historical events from the past in a contemporary perspective and through a mix of fact and fiction he interprets on historical events to create a story of love, war and politics. The conflictual relationship between historical events and Bornedal’s own opinions is one of the main suppliers to the debate surrounding the TV series. When Dansk Folkeparti argues that Bornedal distorts the way the historical events in 1864 is perceived by the Danish society, to a much too large extent, it is a matter of national identity. The way Dansk Folkeparti understand and use the historical events in 1864 is being foiled by Bornedal, which leads to their participation in the debate. Ultimately it is the use of history by Bornedal in 1864 and the way it affects the recollectional community surrounding the events in 1864.
