Abstrakt

This project wishes to examine the head teachers in public primary schools in the city of Copenhagen, Denmark. The underlying thesis is that the ways in which head teachers lead the schools are changing because of the city’s effort to further educate them in the art of management. Through various studies, the analysis shows that the head teachers have become “business leaders” and work as “hybrids”, trying to produce good results in the dichotomy between the traditional teacher professionalism and the new business professionalism, as a result of New Public Management. The project aims at defining the role of head teachers in Copenhagen, and uses four ideal types made by Danish scientist Karina Sehested. The characteristics of these types are then compared with the characteristics of the head teachers, collected via a survey. This then defines the “Copenhagen Role”.
