Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

The purpose of this project is to investigate the liberating potential of self-development. The investigation takes its point of departure in a curiosity founded in the recent criticism of the concept and seeks to create a scientific psychological foundation for a discussion of self-development and its possible liberating or restrictive qualities for the subjective individual. We examine Abraham Maslow’s holistic humanistic science and his concept of self-actualization based in the theory of human motivation by reading his theory through Horkheimer/Adorno’s Dialectic of Enlightenment. Maslow’s theory is further challenged through Axel Honneth’s diagnosis of contemporary society and his proposed concept of self-realization. On the basis of this study it has not been possible to arrive at any scientifically based conclusion with regards to the liberating qualities of self-development. The liberating potential of self-development can with regards to Maslow only be actualized through the subject’s authentic experience.
