In this project, we investigate the notion of the self, which exists within academic psychology. To do that we draw on theory derived from Buddhist psychology. We examine the different understandings of the self that exist, what consequences these understandings entail to the subject and whether it is possible to combine Buddhist psychology and academic psychology. In addition to this, we also discuss what consequences the notion of the self has on a greater societal level, which is what we see within Western culture where the notion of the self is constitutive of the view on human beings. Furthermore, we study the Buddhist notion that the self does not exist, that it is in fact an illusion created by false human understanding. Thus we analyze this theory as well as compare it with the notion of an existing self. The final goal of this project is to acquire a deeper understanding of how we can think about subjective truths and, in the end, get deeper understanding of human suffering and correct ways of thinking in terms of human perception.
