This study has the purpose of exploring the concept of art and its functions. With Arthur C. Danto and the neorepresentationalist theory and Monroe C. Beardsley and the theory of aesthetic functionalism, we seek to explore whether the two works, Exquisite Pain, by Sophie Calle and Biografi, Dagbog, Breve (Biography, Diary, Letters) by Tomas Espedal classify as art. We find that the two works are art in regards to the neorepresentationalist theory, but fall short of fulfilling the requirements in regards to the demands of the aesthetic functionalism. Secondly the study seeks to analyse the performative and self-biographic elements contained in the two works, by using performative literary theories from Jon Helt Haarders and Mette Thobo-Carlsen. We find that the purpose of these elements is to show us a part of the artist’s reality contained and arranged in the fiction of the artworks. Following that, we find that the function of the artworks, in regards to descriptive art functions, are to process the grief of the two artists contained in the artworks.
