Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

This paper explores personal development through disengagement with a sect. By interviewing a former member of the church of Scientology the study sets out to examine how development is grasped in the form of a personal transformation story rooted in an exit from a sect. The intention is to analyze the subject's interpretation and at the same time hold firmly in his current position as a public critic, and most importantly as a former active and highly established member of the sect. By doing this we hope to analyze the personal development spanning from the exit to today, in the subject's story. This analysis bases its theory apparatus and over-all understanding of identity and repositioning upon Dorothy Holland’s notion of Figured Worlds. This concept entails how we as individuals participate in the social construction of meaning by using symbols, by which our identities are mediated. In this theory personal development is seen as improvisation, where we use our learned positions in a new context and in that context negotiate new meaning. In order to discuss transformation and identity it has been necessary to discuss critical psychology to fully comprehend and critique the notion of improvisation. Furthermore we have used the factors of Stockholm Syndrome as interpreted by Dee L. R. Graham to point out the former member’s denial and acceptance of reprehensible acts. As a conclusion on this paper’s thesis statement is that Figured World as a theory can’t comprehend personal development, seeing that in the creation of meaning a person won’t be able to escape the restrictions of society, seen as categories. Finally, there seems to be a great significance to how the former-member chose to tell his personal story, either by being a mediating factor or as an opportunity for agency in which the individual can break the societal restrictions.
