Abstrakt

This project examines how The Daily Show and its host Jon Stewart takes part in the American political debate. Furthermore, the term satire is explained by linguist Paul Simpson who reckons that satire is not as much a genre as it is a practice of discourse. By the use of detailed statistics by Gallup and Pew Research Center, a picture of the American media and its consumers is provided to explain why The Daily Show has gained more viewership through the years. Throughout a critical discourse analysis of preselected episodes of The Daily Show it is clarified how Stewart and his show incorporates and articulates recent and important political issues. The preselected episodes addresses the recent debates concerning the legalization of marijuana in the state of Colorado as well as the introduction of the new healthcare act, also known as ObamaCare. The analysis focuses on how Stewart establishes different layers of use of power using different clips of Fox News and republican politicians, consequently controlling the viewer’s consumption of information and thus its perception of the subject matters. Afterwards a discussion is raised on the responsibility of The Daily Show to create focus on the hidden use of discursive power used by the show, the republicans and Fox News. Moreover it is discussed whether The Daily Show creates a negative or positive image of the American society and more specifically the political system. It is then concluded that The Daily Show plays a unique role in the American society due to the polarization, which has affected the country since its origins. Furthermore, the show functions as a critical reminder to inform the people about the media’s “perception” of news. Finally, the show’s message is put into perspective by looking at the rest of the world and the political implications.
