This study examines how to understand the relation between obesity and unhappiness among young Danes. From a critical theoretical position the study investigates a young girl's tales of her own experiences with obesity and unhappiness. The study is based on socio-psychological perspectives of Knud Illeris and empirical data from a qualitative research-interview with a 12 year old Danish girl. The study concludes that the increasing demands on young people in the late modernity has an increasing impact on the occurrence of both obesity and unhappiness. However, the analysis doesn’t give a clear answer to whether unhappiness is the precursor of obesity or vice versa. Therefore, the relationship must instead be seen as a circular process in which obesity and unhappiness is in a reinforcing interaction.
