This thesis examines how collaboration between employees and volunteers in a voluntary organization can be strengthened. This study is based on specific collaboration between two consultants and two volunteers in Røde Kors Hovedstaden. The empirical material consists of a series of qualitative interviews with experts in the voluntary sector in Denmark, as well as the head of the department, two consultants and two volunteers from Røde Kors Hovedstaden. The thesis use Ulla Habermann’s concepts reason and need together with her motive dimensions to examine what motivates the volunteers and consultants in their work at Røde Kors Hovedstaden. In order to examine what is perceived as meaningful work for volunteers and consultants the thesis use Ib Ravn's definition of what constitutes meaningful work. The thesis also examines which approach the volunteers and employees have to allocation of their roles and tasks and to problem solving. The concept organizational social capital is adapted to be used in a voluntary organization, and through the use of this concepts components trust, justice and collaboration ability, the collaboration and properties in the social relations between consultants and volunteers at Røde Kors Hovedstaden. Concluding the thesis a situation-based model of collaboration between volunteers and employees in a voluntary organization is developed. The model illustrates the conclusion that there is a correlation between the strength of the collaboration between volunteers and consultants, and how each of them are motivated, find work meaningful, and their approach to allocation of roles and tasks and to problem solving. It is also concluded that these three components are variable and in coherence with each other. The thesis concludes that collaboration between volunteers and employees can be strengthened by fine-tuning meaningful work, motivation and approaches.
