Smoking is one of the greatest health problems today, and therefore it is important to search for effective methods to prevent the creation of smoking citizens. Research has argued that in order for such prevention to be effective against smoking, programs must target children and teenagers due to the fact that many adult smokers are smoking, because they began smoking as children and teenagers. Preventive interventions against smoking in Denmark have previously not been proven very effective. This changed when Project X: IT was implemented. X: IT is an intervention targeted at primary school students from 7th to 9th grade and consists of several methods of prevention including parental involvement, non-smoking contracts, education about smoking and rewards to students who comply with the smoke-free contract. X: IT has been shown to reduce smoking students by up to approximately 50 percent. This paper is a psychological theoretical analysis of why and how X: IT is likely to work through certain psychological mechanisms, needs and processes. Furthermore the analysis informs about how X: IT can boost its effectiveness against smoking through modifications and further action.
