This is a project of boy meets girl. In this project, we are examing the development of love, sex and marriage as seen in the romantic comedy. Our project examines roughly 50 years of romantic comedies, from the late sixties until today. We have based our way of approaching the romantic comedy, and its different genres, on the research of Tamar Jeffers Mcdonalds book Boy meets girl meets genre. Due to having Mcdonald as the inspiration of our project, we have split the romantic comedy into five different periods. Each of these periods are distinct in their way of portraying the relationship between love, sex and marriage. For every period, we have done a careful analysis of two main movies, in order to establish a framework of how each particular period differs and compares to each other. Besides having two main movies, every period also consists of many supporting movies, while these analysis’ are not as thorough as the others, they still help outline particular trends in every period. Furthermore, every period is accompanied by some kind of historical context that tries to explain why a particular trend or change has taken place. The historical context is more prevalent in the older periods, as they have been studied more carefully and their contexts are better understood due to the perspective time has provided. In the end, this project presents a thorough analysis of how love, sex and marriage is depicted in the romantic comedy, from the late sixties until today.
