Title: How do pedagogues and leaders experience the course and the use of the Resilience program in their practice?
Today, there is a strong focus, from society and politicians, to make children and young people
more resilient. More and more children and young people suffer from mental health problems.
Professionals are therefore trained in working with children and young people's resilience.
Since the resources for the educational work in the day care institutions for many years has been
reduced, it may be hard to find time to apply new knowledge in practice that can strengthen
children's mental health.
The Danish Committee of Health Education offers courses of resilience, using practical tools, to
make it easy for pedagogues to apply their knowledge of resilience in their practice.
My own experience as a pedagogue and my study job at the Danish Committee of Health
Education has made me interested in studying how the resilience program works and how the
institutional organization allows pedagogues and leaders to work with children's resilience.
The thesis therefore studies pedagogues’ and leaders’ experiences with the course in resilience
and the use of it in their practice. The thesis looks at the leaders’ and pedagogues’ experiences
from a hermeneutic perspective and is inspired by educational ethnography.
The thesis has found that the resilience program is similar to the way the pedagogues are already
working and that the tools allow pedagogues to easily work with the children's resilience.
However, the pedagogues and leaders need to guide the rest of the staff and the parents in the
daycare using the tools as they may otherwise act as a quick solution without understanding how
and why the tools are used in specific situations.
When the program is to be used in practice, the work and experience of pedagogues and leaders
are different from each other. The pedagogues would like to work with the program immediately
after the end of the course, while the leaders want to wait with the implementation. This
discrepancy seems to demotivate the pedagogues and due to lack of time being available to use
the program, they do not learn to use it immediately. The collaboration between management
and pedagogues has therefore proved to be decisive for the motivation of the educator and for
the opportunity to learn and thus also for the benefit of the program.
