This project is based on our assumption that rhetorical skills increase an individual's ability to critically reflect about societal issues. To figure out if this indeed was true, we wrote speeches with arguments from both sides in the recent EU-referendum in Denmark. Afterwards we decided to perform the speeches in two different high-school classes, Ørestad Gymnasium and Bagsværd Kostskole & Gymnasium. The class from Ørestad was a rhetoric class, whilst the other was a social science class. The purpose of this was to examine if there existed a difference in the student's critical thinking capabilities . We came to the conclusion that it depends on the form of critical rhetorical conscience. From the reception of our speeches we can conclude that consciousness about the construction of speeches do not always guarantee a stronger critical approach. Another conclusion we made was that the situation and the circumstances control a great deal of how a given speech is received by the audience, which also makes it rather difficult to measure the effect a speech has in relation to an audience.
