This project is concerned with the ethics and morality of war, specifically, the moral criteria regarding the initial engagement of war, known as jus ad bellum. It accounts for the different opinions within the concepts of jus ad bellum, discusses these opinions and reaches either conclusions or heightened discourse regarding the different aspects of jus ad bellum. This has been done through the use of conceptanalysis and analysis of argumentation, based on the writings of leading Just War philosophers, primarily Jeff McMahan and Michael Walzer. The findings have beenused in a discussion of the war that the U.S started in Iraq, in which the very utilitarian philosopher David Mellow is introduced. The paper concludes that the war in Iraq was unjust, since it was unnecessary as it pertains to the goal it sought out to accomplish, the confiscation of possible weapons of massdestruction.
