Religion, Conservatism and Society in Post-modern Denmark

Fahreta Ajanovic

Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

Abstrakt

The aim of the project is to track down a shift in the religious perception of the Danish population and of the Conservative political party. This is attempted on the basis of some general concepts of Èmile Durkheim and a categorisation of religious affiliations used in the book “Kulturmøder og religion-Identitetsdannelse blandt kristne og muslimske unge” by Safet Bektovic. Although the general concept “religion” is commonly used throughout the project, the emphasis remains on the Evangelical-Lutheran Christianity attributed to the Danish society and not on e.g. Islam or various new forms of religiousness. Sections discussing historical realities such as the Enlightenment Period and the influence of N.F.S. Grundtvig are included in order to understand the influence on the post-modern individual. Also, in relation to politics in general and the Conservative political party in particular, discussions on e.g. the ideals of conservatism and separation of church and state are incorporated. These sections are made relevant in terms of the intention to understand how and why the traditional perception of religion in Denmark has changed?
