It is the primary aim of this master thesis to contribute to the knowledge and consequences of involvement of volunteers in public welfare solutions in Denmark. I intend to investigate from the point of view of the relation professionals at Bispebjerghjemmet, a nursing home in the northern part of Copenhagen, what the consequences of the involvement of volunteers in the daily work are. I intend to investigate how the relation professionals’ professionalism is subject to an influence from volunteers at Bispebjerghjemmet and what the consequences of the professional system of the involvement of volunteers are. On the basis of theory regarding volunteers and answers from qualitative interviews and a survey conducted among the relation professionals I conclude that volunteers at Bispebjerghjemmet by the relation professionals are seen as carriers of special knowledge and social capital that constitutes a potential competition in the access to work assignments. On the basis of theory regarding social closure and credentialism and my data I conclude that the relation professionals at Bispebjerghjemmet exercise social closure to protect themselves in the competition for work assignments at the nursing home. On the basis of theory regarding professional systems and my data I conclude that the presence of volunteers at Bispebjerghjemmet constitute a pressure on the professional system. The relation professionals try to talk the volunteers out of the professional system, but in their action they accept the presence of volunteers. On the basis of theory regarding hybrids between volunteers and employees in the public sector I finally discuss if there is a potential for volunteers to evolve into a hybrid between volunteers and employees. I conclude that the relation professionals count on the work that is conducted by the volunteers and that they regard the tasks they perform as tasks they themselves are not able to perform. Thereby and in extension to the discussion I argue that volunteers of Bispebjerghjemmet are plausible to evolve into a hybrid between volunteers and employees of Bispebjerghjemmet. I finally put my master thesis into a perspective where I discuss if it is possible to give recommendations to extend the involvement of volunteers in the public sector and give my contributions to further investigations to be able to give such recommendations.
